Pangur Ban



Fanart for The Secret of Kells, and I guess you could say also for the poem Pangur Ban.

Pangur Ban

I and Pangur Ban, my cat,
'Tis a like task we are at;
Hunting mice is his delight,
Hunting words I sit all night.

Better far than praise of men
'Tis to sit with book and pen;
Pangur bears me no ill will;
He, too, plies his simple skill.

At our task how glad are we,
When at home we sit and find

The passage illustrated:

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled 'ORANGE MARMALADE', but to her great disappointment it was empty: she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.

I need more space!

I JUST BARELY did this illustration, and nobody else has critiqued it or looked at it or ANYTHING... so I'll probably come back to this and see some horribly glaring error, but ah well. I haven't put much up on this blog in awhile since mostly I've been working traditionally, and I don't have a decent camera for taking pictures, so I just wanted to put this up for you all to see.

This was our most recent assignment in my Narrative class. We were each given a copy of today's New York Times and told to choose an article, any article, and do a black-and-white spot illustration for it. The article I chose was about a couple who were both writers, but they only had room for one of them to have office space to write in, which they decided that the husband needed more. Therefore, the wife had to squish herself into the living room in order to write, before they had an interior designer come help them arrange and decorate their apartment. Most of the article was about the whole interior design bit, but I chose to focus on the beginning.

My final for my digital painting class.

Ghost Girl

Another assignment in my Digital Painting class. We could do anything halloween themed, and I wanted to try painting something transparent, so... here it is.

"Do you understand what is going to happen to you, Goatfoot?"

Ok, so I haven't posted anything in AGES. Sorry. But part of that is I haven't really had anything I felt particularly post-worthy, or anything that wouldn't require the bother of photographing, editing, etc. in order to put up--and I am both busy and somewhat lazy and so haven't taken the time to do that. I finally decided that I needed to get SOMETHING up here.

So.

Here is my first-ever painting done in Corel Painter. I painted it out of my head (as in, no photo reference) so some of the anatomy is kind of Eh, but that is, of course, my own fault. I'm still figuring out Painter, which is a kind of glitchy program, and I'm used to photoshop. But I didn't think this painting so horrible that I wouldn't put it up--I don't pretend that I'm not still learning to do art, because I most definitely am. (Learning, that is.)



This is a fanart piece for Megan Whalen Turner's The Queen of Attolia. The earrings are rather significant, but thats all I'm gonna say about that. When my teacher was critiquing it, he was trying to help us with more than just technique, so he was asking me about the scene I was illustrating.

"Who is this?" he asked.
"Um, well, this is a scene from one of my favorite books. She's a queen."
"Oh. Well, is she a good queen or a bad queen?"
"Um, well... actually, shes sort of ambiguous."
"Oh. Well, thats OK then, because she looks ambiguous."


For some reason I found this exchange amusing, and decided to post it here. :D

This picture was for a german language class, I believe. It was for a lesson on prepositions. I had to have everything in the correct relation to everything else in the room, so they could answer questions like, Where are the shoes? etc.
