I drew this baby deer for absolutely no reason at all, other than the fact that I wanted to and I thought that it would look cool. I used the same texture as I did in the Geog 250 Splash and Pangur Ban pictures. There is still a definite Secret of Kells influence here, though I think that it is also very much *me*, and heading in the direction I would like to take my artwork.

Pangur Ban

I and Pangur Ban, my cat,

The passage illustrated:

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled 'ORANGE MARMALADE', but to her great disappointment it was empty: she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.

I JUST BARELY did this illustration, and nobody else has critiqued it or looked at it or ANYTHING... so I'll probably come back to this and see some horribly glaring error, but ah well. I haven't put much up on this blog in awhile since mostly I've been working traditionally, and I don't have a decent camera for taking pictures, so I just wanted to put this up for you all to see.

This was our most recent assignment in my Narrative class. We were each given a copy of today's New York Times and told to choose an article, any article, and do a black-and-white spot illustration for it. The article I chose was about a couple who were both writers, but they only had room for one of them to have office space to write in, which they decided that the husband needed more. Therefore, the wife had to squish herself into the living room in order to write, before they had an interior designer come help them arrange and decorate their apartment. Most of the article was about the whole interior design bit, but I chose to focus on the beginning.

Ok, so I haven't posted anything in AGES. Sorry. But part of that is I haven't really had anything I felt particularly post-worthy, or anything that wouldn't require the bother of photographing, editing, etc. in order to put up--and I am both busy and somewhat lazy and so haven't taken the time to do that. I finally decided that I needed to get SOMETHING up here.

So.

Here is my first-ever painting done in Corel Painter. I painted it out of my head (as in, no photo reference) so some of the anatomy is kind of Eh, but that is, of course, my own fault. I'm still figuring out Painter, which is a kind of glitchy program, and I'm used to photoshop. But I didn't think this painting so horrible that I wouldn't put it up--I don't pretend that I'm not still learning to do art, because I most definitely am. (Learning, that is.)

This is a fanart piece for Megan Whalen Turner's The Queen of Attolia. The earrings are rather significant, but thats all I'm gonna say about that. When my teacher was critiquing it, he was trying to help us with more than just technique, so he was asking me about the scene I was illustrating.

"Who is this?" he asked.
"Um, well, this is a scene from one of my favorite books. She's a queen."
"Oh. Well, is she a good queen or a bad queen?"
"Um, well... actually, shes sort of ambiguous."
"Oh. Well, thats OK then, because she looks ambiguous."

For some reason I found this exchange amusing, and decided to post it here. :D

This picture was for a german language class, I believe. It was for a lesson on prepositions. I had to have everything in the correct relation to everything else in the room, so they could answer questions like, Where are the shoes? etc.

This was my first assignment at Independent Study, and I had alot of fun with it. I looked at dozens and dozens of Japanese Woodblock prints for inspiration.

The print size for these is only 2 inches high, which is why they're so small. I'm not including the text for a few reasons--one, because the text these were made specifically for was translated directly from beginners Japanese and is therefore very clunky. Second, I don't really have any kind of rights to that text. Third, I think you all know the story well enough to know what is going on.

Our first assignment in Computer Applications was to Illustrate a fortune out of a fortune cookie, which I thought was a pretty fun way for everyone to get their own concept to illustrate.

My fortune was, "Take that chance you've been considering."

I always enjoy using bright unusual colors in my illustrations. However, one of my roommates told me that while she loved the fun flesh tones I used on the boy, they also happened to be the color of bruises. I decided that this means either that this boy lives in the Magical Land of Colorful Shadows, or he has Tried This Before.)

This was the second in-class assignment for my Illustration 1 class. The assignment was to do a sill life of food, either with a theme of healthy or unhealthy. Obviously, I chose to paint healthy food.

I chose to change the colors, etc., slightly in the painting for a different, and I think better, overall look.

This was the first in class assignment for my Illustration 1 class. The assignment was to do a still life in black and white illustrating the concept of the commercialization of Christmas.

Here we have a manger, but instead of the Christ child it is filled with wrapped gift packages and candy. There is only one animal present with the manger, and it is a lifeless piggy bank.

This painting was done for an LDS Stake girls camp. I was a Youth Leader and one of my responsibilities was creating posters relating to our camp theme, "Put on the Whole Armor of God" and our camp hymn, "Whos on the Lords side, Who?" I think they expected something a little more slapdash and "cute", because they seemed really pleased and surprised when I delivered the finished pieces.

Oh no! Where did all the posts go?

Well, I deleted them, actually. But never fear--all the photos that were on display are avaliable and I'll get them up later. Except the ones that I don't like... I'm doing this site this time around, so therefore only work I like will be going up on it! Haha!

Why did I delete them all?

Because. Well, because this site wasn't really doing anything at all. And I'm supposed to start an art blog/website for my Intermediate Computer Applications class. I saw no reason to start a completely new one when I already had this one.

We were actually encouraged to use wordpress for the project, because wordpress makes it easier to navigate through the kind of art you want to see, make "pages" that arent entries, etc. Which I understand, but again, why make a completely new art blog when I have one sitting around?

So I added a labels thingy on the side. As long as I remember to label all my posts, clearly, it should help people find the kind of art they're looking for.

Lets see how this works out.
